Choosing a Non-Fiction Book

This afternoon in the library Mrs Clark let us choose a book from the non-fiction side of the library.
We had to use browsing cards for the first time!

Browsing cards saved the place of where our book came from, and reminded us where to put it back.

We had lots of fun looking at books about dinosaurs, animals, cars and all sorts of interesting non-fiction topics. Everyone was very careful and returned their unwanted book back to the right place.

Lots of children have taken a non-fiction book home to read tonight.

Maths Week

This week it's Maths Week throughout New Zealand.
Our school has been involved with lots of activities within and outside the classroom.
Today, Room 3 - Year 6 came down to share a maths trail with Room 12.
The children went off with a Y6 buddy and completed a series of maths tasks and challenges.
Examples such as:
- Count the brink walls between the senior classes
- How many colours on the dragon?
-How many planks on the house benches?
-How many pairs of shoes are there in your group?
             

   



All the children had a great time completing the tasks.

A Busy Week

Last week was all go!
On Monday we celebrated 100 days at school - with lots of activities and games related to the number 100!

Wow! How fast have 100 days flashed by?? Roll on the next 100!


Then we had Mr Des Forges pop into Room 12 with a trolly full of ipad minis!
He show the class how to "code" using an app called Scratch Junior. (It's free!)
The children loved moving their character around the screen, changing the scenery and adding audio. There was lots of collaboration amomgst the children - it was great to see them helping each other out, suggesting ideas and encouraging each other.

                       

In 2020 the new Digital Technology Curriculum will be put into place throughout NZ schools.

"It has been designed to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to become digitally capable individuals. There is a need for greater focus on our students building their skills so they can be innovative creators of digital solutions, moving beyond solely being users and consumers of digital technologies."

I think our children are well on the way!

Then there was our dance performance.
After 9  x 30 minute lessons we were ready to perform our 2 dances.
The children were so excited and did so well.

Louie comes to school

As part of our writing programme, we wrote a letter to Mrs Adamson persuading her to let Louie the dog visit the class.
The children had lots of good reasons for her to come to school and not come to school.
Here is her reply:


So today, Louie popped in after lunch:


We went into the forest and the children had turns throwing the ball for her (until the ball went over the fence) or taking her for a walk.



We came back to class and all had another chance to pat her and watch her drink some water.
Then we all washed our hands!



I think Louie loved her afternoon at school.

Pacific Mamas

Today we had a great visit from the Pacific Mamas.
We learnt how to greet one another in many Pacific languages.
Then we went to make leis. Did you know a lei can be made of seeds, shells, lollies, egg cartons and plastic! We made one for someone special.














We had to concerntrate and follow the pattern "flower, straw, flower, straw" to make the colourful leis.
Then it was off to the hall for some druming and dancing.



We learnt that in the 'olden' days the drums were used to send messages to the villages. Also girls were not allowed to play them. Today drums help keep the rhythm of the beat for dancing.
A drum has two ears and a mouth!







We had so much fun with the Pacific Mamas!
